Is your Board Conscious? Personal contributions by Board members

The debate about governance and the role of Boards has taken many directions, including accountability, strategic responsibility, compliance, independence, interaction between the CEO and the Board, Director competencies, and most recently the quality of information considered by the Board (see article on the CEO syndrome).

One area that has been somewhat neglected is the personal contribution of individual Board members to the collective consciousness, awareness, and behaviour of the Board. Board processes have been well documented, and it is now time to move on to the insight, passion, enthusiasm, excitement and energy that should be the right of every Board and the contribution of every Board member.

Conscious awareness is the key to a high performance Board.

Conscious Board members are truly aware of what is happening around them, they consciously choose whatever they do or perceive, and they have the ability to perceive all that is happening around them, including thoughts, biases and feelings, without buying into that perception as reality. The more conscious they are, the more insight they are capable of – perceptive and intuitive insight that can anticipate problems before they turn ugly.

The Conscious Board member knows, and acts upon that knowing, preception and intuition with trust and conviction. They exemplify continuous renewal and transformation.

The conscious Board can effectively facilitate expanded levels of consciousness for the organisation, which can create a high attractor energy field. Research has shown that the success or failure of any business endeavour corresponds with whether the business endeavour is associated with a high or a low attractor pattern. (D. R.
