Are you the leader or just the Boss?

Ask yourself these questions

??? What does leadership mean to you?

??? How do you feel about the word “leader”?

??? How is leadership perceived in your organization?

Many CEOs believe that because they have a title and a position of CEO or Executive Director they automatically become leaders. They have bought into one of the leadership myths that says ‘Leadership is based on Position’. This is one of the greatest myths about leadership.

In our view, true leadership is about the ability to create change and transformation, and the ability to inspire and influence others to choose to change and transform.

Unfortunately, many people who call themselves leaders do a pitiful job creating change and transformation. In truth, most of these people often never create any positive change.

For most CEOs the only influence they have is that which is connected to their position and title. Due to their position of authority, they become “the Boss” and have the power that allows them to be in command of and direct their staff. Staff would not necessarily voluntarily follow “the Boss” in the normal course of events, but are expected to carry out directions and obey the dictums of “the Boss”. Low morale is always present in the organization that is run by the “Boss”.

Please recognize that if you are the Boss and not a true leader, your staff will not follow you beyond your stated authority that comes with your title. Most of them will perform their duty and follow your orders because they are required to do it.

So, from this point of view – Are you a leader or just the boss? Would you be willing to acknowledge that true leadership is much more than having position and authority that comes with the title?

To become an extraordinary leader you have to become a conscious leader by combining both executive management skills and conscious leadership abilities. Executive management skills are necessary to win credibility with the staff as a leader and with the board of governance as an executive. In this framework, executive management is not about managing people to get things done in the business, but is more to do with taking vision and strategy to the staff. It is about managing what things get done through which people.

One of the greatest steps toward becoming a truly extraordinary leader is cultivating the beingness of conscious leadership. Begin to claim, own and acknowledge your beingness of conscious leadership. It is important to be aware of and acknowledge that everyone has infinite potential to be a conscious leader. Consciousness resides inside each of us as an infinite reservoir of intuitive knowing, wisdom and acumen. If claimed, owned and embraced wholeheartedly, “consciousness” allow you to revel in your own greatness and extraordinariness without superiority or hierarchy.
